Software rarely fails in the big idea. It fails in the unglamorous places: the import that breaks on one edge case, the screen that takes four seconds to load, the setting that quietly doesn’t stick. Years of data work taught me that. Optivane started there.
When the current wave of AI arrived, getting deep into it was less a decision than a reflex. It is the most interesting thing to happen to this work in years, and most of my time with it goes to a single question: where does it genuinely earn a place in a product, and where is it just decoration?
An instrument that guesses isn’t an instrument. I’d rather ship a smaller thing that is right.
The name comes from there. A vane reads the wind and shows you the way, a plain and honest direction with nothing added. That is the job I want my software to do.
